Program Requirements

Students must fulfill the Oakland University General Education Requirements, the General College of Arts and Sciences Requirements, the College of Arts & Sciences Exploratory Requirement, and the Major Requirements. Additionally, students must complete a sufficient number of free elective courses to meet the overall credit requirement for their degree. A minimum of 120 credits is required, although some degree programs may require a higher total credit count.

General Education Requirements

In order to graduate on-schedule without taking additional courses, it is highly recommended that students meet with an Undergraduate Academic Adviser concerning the selection of all of their General Education courses.

Each candidate for an Oakland University baccalaureate will need to satisfactorily complete approved courses in each of the following areas: Foundations, Explorations, and Integration. For details, refer to the General Education Requirements section of the catalog.

To earn the Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Applied Statistics, students must:

1. Complete 28 Credits in Statistics.

  • course Applied Probability and Statistics (4)

  • course Applied Linear Models I (4)

  • course Introduction to Mathematical Statistics I (4)

  • course Introduction to Mathematical Statistics II (4)

  • 12 credits chosen from STA courses numbered above 3000 (but not course-course)

2. Complete:

And 1 More Course Chosen From:

  • course Introduction to Differential Equations (4)

  • course Discrete Mathematics (4)

  • course Applied Matrix Theory (4)

  • course Numerical Methods (4)

  • course Applied Numerical Methods: Matrix Methods (4)

  • course Elementary Models in Operations Research (4)

  • course Engineering Operations Research (3)

  • course Linear and Integer Optimization (4)

  • course Nonlinear Optimizations (4)

  • course Stochastic Models in Operations Research (4)

3. Complete 1 of the Following:

  • course Introduction to Computer Programming (4)

6. Complete 4 Additional 3- or 4-Credit Courses in a Single Area Outside the Department of Mathematics and Statistics to Which Statistics Could Be Applied.

The courses must include at least 1 that is quantitatively oriented. The rest of the courses could come from prerequisite courses or any related courses. These courses must be approved in advance by an Adviser in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. The courses need not be in a single department, but the total package should constitute a substantive examination of a single area. Courses used to satisfy this requirement may also be used to satisfy university General Education or college exploratory requirements.

7. Earn a Minimum grade of C in Each Mathematical Sciences and Computer Science Course Used to Satisfy the Major Requirements.

Applicable Minors

All Minors are applicable to this major with the exception of the following Minor(s): Applied Mathematics, Applied Statistics, Child Welfare, International Orientation for EGR/CS, and Sustainability Engineering.
