Program Requirements
Students must fulfill the Oakland University General Education Requirements, the General College of Arts and Sciences Requirements, the College of Arts & Sciences Exploratory Requirement, and the Major Requirements. Additionally, students must complete a sufficient number of free elective courses to meet the overall credit requirement for their degree. A minimum of 120 credits is required, although some degree programs may require a higher total credit count.
General Education Requirements
In order to graduate on-schedule without taking additional courses, it is highly recommended that students meet with an Undergraduate Academic Adviser concerning the selection of all of their General Education courses.
Each candidate for an Oakland University baccalaureate will need to satisfactorily complete approved courses in each of the following areas: Foundations, Explorations, and Integration. For details, refer to the General Education Requirements section of the catalog.
Requirements for the liberal arts major in French Language and Literature, B.A. program
To earn the Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in French Language and Literature, students must complete 44 credits in French and French literature.
1. 36 credits at the 3000 and 4000 levels in French (FRH) or Modern Languages (ML) selected from the following courses:
course French Grammar through Short Stories (4)
course French Creative Writing (4)
course French Civilization (4)
course Translation into English (4)
course French Business Communication (4)
course Cinema and Literature from the Francophone World (4)
course Introduction to Great Works of French Literature (4)
course French Conversation and Phonetics (4)
course Translation into French (4)
course Global Gateways (4)
Choose at least 1 4000 level Literature course selected from:
course French Literature from the Middle Ages through the Sixteenth Century (4)
course French Literature - Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries (4)
course French Literature - Nineteenth Century (4)
course Modern and Contemporary French Literature (4)
course Undergraduate Seminar (2 OR 4)
2. Choose 2 General Education Courses
Required for the Major and also satisfies the university’s General Education Requirement in specific areas:
course European Literature before 1850 (4) before 1850 (Literature)
or course European Literature after 1850 (4) (Literature)course Texts from the French and Francophone World (pre-1800) (4) (Global Perspectives or Western Civilization not both)
or course Texts from the French and Francophone World (post-1800) (4) (Global Perspectives or Western Civilization not both)
Additional Program Information
Students planning graduate work are strongly urged to study a second foreign language recommended by the department. At least 16 credits of those required for the major in any of the languages must be taken at Oakland University.
Applicable Minors
All Minors are applicable to this major with the exception of the following Minor(s): Child Welfare, French Language, French Language and Literature, International Orientation for EGR/CS, and Sustainability Engineering.
