Program Requirements

General Education Requirements


In order to graduate on-schedule without taking additional courses, it is highly recommended that students meet with an Undergraduate Academic Adviser concerning the selection of all of their general education courses.

Each candidate for an Oakland University baccalaureate will need to satisfactorily complete approved courses in each of the following areas: Foundations, Explorations, and Integration. For details, refer to the General Education Requirements section of the catalog.

Requirements for the liberal arts major in Economics, B.A. program


The program leading to a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics includes Cognate Courses in mathematics, statistics and computers and Required Economics Courses and Economics Electives, as listed below. The Economics major must complete each of the Cognate, Required and Elective Courses with a grade of C or better:

Cognate Courses


  • course Business Problem Solving with Information Technology (3)

  • course Elementary Algebra (4) (if required by ACT or SAT scores)

  • course  Intermediate Algebra (4) (if required by ACT or SAT scores)

  • course Linear Programming Elementary Functions (4)
    or course Precalculus (4)

  • course Calculus for the Social Sciences (4)
    or course Calculus I (4)

  • course Statistical Methods for Business I (3)
    or course 

    or course

  • course Statistical Methods for Business II  (3)

Required Courses


  • course Principles of Microeconomics (4) and course Principles of Global Macroeconomics (4) or course Principles of Macroeconomics (4)

  • course Intermediate Macroeconomics (3)

  • course Managerial Economics (3)

  • course Consumer and Welfare Economics (3)

  • course Seminar in Economic Policy (3)

Economics Major Electives


Choose 5 Economics Electives at the 3000 level or above.

No more than 3 credits of course, course, or course may be counted as Electives.

Students taking course or course before  course, course or course, and who subsequently become Economics majors, should talk to the Department Chairperson.

Note: Students must meet any course prerequisites before taking these courses.  All Cognate, Required and Major Elective Courses must be completed with a grade of C or better.

Applicable Minors


All Minors are applicable to this major with the exception of the following Minor(s): Child Welfare, Economics, International Orientation for EGR/CS, and Sustainability Engineering.
