Program Requirements

Requirements for the Certificate in Disability Awareness and Literacy


Students qualify for a Certificate in Disability Awareness and Literacy by completing a minimum of 3 of the following requirements listed below.

1. Required Core Course


  • course Introduction to American Sign Language (4)
    or course Introduction to Sociology (4) 
    or course Introduction to Sociology through Health and Medicine (4) 

2. Electives (Choose 2)


  • course Disability and Communication in Everyday Life (4)

  • course American Sign Language for Healthcare Personnel and First Responders (4)

  • course Health Communication (4)

  • course Disability Studies and Literature (4)

  • course Sociology of Mental Illness (4)*

  • course Sociological Perspectives on Aging (4)*

  • course Sociology of Health and Medicine (4)*

    *Prerequisite course or course

Students interested in this certificate should contact an Adviser in the Communication program in the Department of Communication, Journalism, and Public Relations or an Adviser in the Sociology program in the Department of Sociology, Anthropology, Social Work and Criminal Justice.
