Program Requirements

Students must fulfill the Oakland University General Education Requirements, the General College of Arts and Sciences Requirements, the College of Arts & Sciences Exploratory Requirement, and the Major Requirements. Additionally, students must complete a sufficient number of free elective courses to meet the overall credit requirement for their degree. A minimum of 120 credits is required, although some degree programs may require a higher total credit count.


General Education Requirements


In order to graduate on-schedule without taking additional courses, it is highly recommended that students meet with an Undergraduate Academic Adviser concerning the selection of all of their General Education courses.

Each candidate for an Oakland University baccalaureate will need to satisfactorily complete approved courses in each of the following areas: Foundations, Explorations, and Integration. For details, refer to the General Education Requirements section of the catalog.

Requirements for the liberal arts major in German Language and Literatures, B.A. program


To earn the Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in German Language and Literature, students must complete 44 credits in German and European literature, of which 36 credits must be at the 3000 and 4000 levels in German (GRM) or Modern Languages (ML).

Choose 2 General Education Courses


Required for Major and also satisfies the university General Education Requirement in specific areas:

  • course European Literature before 1850 (4) (Literature)
    or course European Literature after 1850 (4) 
    (Literature)

  • course Holocaust and European Literature (4) (Western Civilization)

Note


course can replace either course or course as a required course. If course has not been taken as a replacement for course or course students may take course as an Elective.

Additional Program Information


Students planning graduate work are strongly urged to study a second foreign language recommendation by the department. At least 16 credits of those required for the major in any of the languages must be taken at Oakland University.

Applicable Minors


All Minors are applicable to this major with the exception of the following Minor(s): Child Welfare, German Language, International Orientation for EGR/CS, and Sustainability Engineering.
