The Bachelor of Science in Radiologic Technology provides a comprehensive foundation in the principles and practice of diagnostic imaging using ionizing radiation. The curriculum emphasizes the integration of scientific knowledge, critical thinking, and advanced technical skills in the imaging of internal structures for diagnostic and research purposes.

Coursework prepares students to apply knowledge of anatomy, physiology, patient positioning, and radiographic technique in the performance of radiologic procedures. Emphasis is placed on effective communication, professional judgment, and compassionate, patient-centered care within a variety of health care settings.

Graduates develop the competencies necessary to work collaboratively with radiologists and other health care professionals and to function effectively in roles requiring direct patient contact, including patient positioning and procedural support. Radiologic Technology is a rewarding field that combines patient care with modern medical technology and prepares graduates for professional practice and continued development within the clinical and diagnostic sciences.

Admission

To be accepted to the Radiologic Technology program, students must submit a formal application. Application for the Radiologic Technology program is processed in the winter semester of the sophomore year (or winter semester following completion of the Clinical and Diagnostic Sciences core curriculum) prior to the August start date of each year. Acceptance into the program is competitive and based on the prerequisite math and science grade point average, personal interview, entrance exam score, and letters of recommendation. Work or volunteer experience which involves direct patient care will be considered favorably in the admissions process. Most didactic course work is completed at Oakland University and the supervised clinical experience is scheduled at various hospitals and health care centers within 50 miles of the Oakland University campus. Didactic lab courses are held at Corewell Health in Royal Oak.

It is recommended that students have at least a 3.00 overall GPA, however this is not a requirement. Students should check the program’s website for exact application dates.

Other program affiliate requirements

Once accepted to the Radiologic Technology program, students are responsible for adhering to all clinical site policies regarding CPR certification, background check, immunizations, TB testing, drug testing, and all onboarding and annual learning requirements. In order to protect patients and provide a safe environment for students, staff, and the public, all students are required to have up-to-date immunizations, including the seasonal flu vaccine. If an applicant fails to comply with the immunization policy, or fails the background check, the applicant’s acceptance into the program will be rescinded. Vaccine exemption forms may be considered, but it will be determined by the program clinical affiliate. Students are required to obtain and maintain their own medical insurance coverage for the duration of the Radiologic Technology program.

It is recommended that students have at least a 3.00 overall GPA. Students with lower grade point averages may be admitted provisionally pending satisfactory completion of appropriate fall semester, junior-year course work. Students should check the clinical program’s website for exact application dates.

Academic Advising

All students are required to meet with their professional academic advisor in the School of Health Sciences at least once a year to review progress toward their degree.

Advanced Modalities for Radiologic Technologists

Professionals who are currently American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) registered may expand on their existing knowledge in the areas of Computed Tomography (CT), Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), or Mammography by enrolling in an advanced modality course. Each course is approximately one semester (15 - 17 weeks) in length and includes three to four days of clinical and one three-hour class per week. Clinical hours take place on days and afternoon shifts at various healthcare institutions. Clinical shifts vary based on the clinical rotation schedule, as assigned. With permission, additional clinical time may be allowed. Didactic coursework may be offered online. These advanced modality courses demand a high level of student professionalism, personal commitment, and academic focus.

Students may apply for admission to one of the modality courses listed below, through the Radiologic Technology program application process. Applicants are required to hold current ARRT registration or become registered with the ARRT within two weeks after the modality course start date and they must meet all clinical site student onboarding requirements including but not limited to obtaining correct CPR, immunizations, drug testing, and background checks. Applications are accepted year round and the courses may be scheduled any semester based on the number of applicants. Acceptance into a modality course is based on previous math and science grade point average, personal interview, and letters of recommendation.

Graduation requirements and grade point policy

Students in the Radiologic Technology degree program whose cumulative grade point average falls below a 2.80, or those who do not meet the affiliate Radiologic Technology program grade requirements, are not able to graduate.
