Program Requirements

A minor in Creative Writing provides students with a foundation in the craft of writing across genres, including fiction, poetry, screenwriting, and nonfiction. Designed to complement any major, the minor helps students develop skills in storytelling, critical thinking, revision, and expressive communication. This minor is ideal for students with a passion for creative writing as well as those seeking to strengthen their writing skills in support of broader academic and professional goals.

Requirements for the liberal arts minor in Creative Writing


The liberal arts minor in Creative Writing requires a total of 16 credits in English and Creative Writing. A minimum of 6 credits of the minor must be at the 3000 level or above.

1. Choose 1 of the following


  • course Creative Writing for Non-Majors (4)

  • course  Intro to Screen/TV Writing (4)

  • course Introduction to Memoir and Personal Essay (4)

2. Choose 2 CW (Creative Writing) Courses.


3. Choose 1 ENG (English) Course at the 2000 level or higher


The following ENG classes do not fulfill this requirement:  course, course, course.

Additional Information


Only courses in which the student has earned a grade of C may be counted toward the Creative Writing minor. Only one 1000-level course will be accepted for credit in the minor.

Applicable Majors


All Majors can declare this Minor with the exception of the following Major(s): Creative Writing.
