Program Requirements
Students must fulfill the Oakland University General Education Requirements, the General College of Arts and Sciences Requirements, the College of Arts & Sciences Exploratory Requirement, and the Major Requirements. Additionally, students must complete a sufficient number of free elective courses to meet the overall credit requirement for their degree. A minimum of 120 credits is required, although some degree programs may require a higher total credit count.
General Education Requirements
In order to graduate on-schedule without taking additional courses, it is highly recommended that students meet with an Undergraduate Academic Adviser concerning the selection of all of their General Education courses.
Each candidate for an Oakland University baccalaureate will need to satisfactorily complete approved courses in each of the following areas: Foundations, Explorations, and Integration. For details, refer to the General Education Requirements section of the catalog.
Requirements for the liberal arts major in Two Modern Languages, B.A. program
The requirement is a minimum of 20 credits at the 3000 and 4000 levels in each of 2 languages. The following courses are required in the given languages, with other courses chosen as electives:
Chinese - course/course and course
French - course and course
German - course and course/course
Japanese - course and course
Spanish - course and course
3 collateral courses are required: course and 2 courses in History or Civilization, 1 in each language area, to be approved by the student’s Department Adviser. course and course are recommended.
When 1 of the languages is Chinese or Japanese, course and course along with either course or course are recommended.
Students are strongly advised to complete a minor in a complementary field. Most traditional graduate programs in language and literature will require students in this major to fulfill additional prerequisites in literature. At least 16 credits of those required for the major in two modern languages must be taken at Oakland University.
Regression Policy
Students will not receive credit for a lower sequence course after successful completion of a more advanced level course. For example, students will not receive credit for course (or transfer course equivalent) if taken after successful completion of course.
Applicable Minors
All Minors are applicable to this major with the exception of the following Minor(s): Child Welfare, French Language (not available to French Language and Literature majors), French Language and Literature (not available to French Language and Literature majors), German Language (not available to German Language and Literature majors), International Orientation for EGR/CS, Japanese Language (not available to Japanese Language and Literature and Japanese Studies majors), Spanish (not available to Spanish Language and Literature majors), Spanish Language and Literature (not available to Spanish Language and Literature majors), and Sustainability Engineering.
