Understanding Video Games

This course will introduce students to the critical studies of video games as art and entertainment, a thriving industry, and a significant part of popular culture. We will learn different ways to approach the analysis of video games and their place in society, and in the process learn about some historically significant games and milestones within gaming technology and industry. We cannot learn everything about video games this semester, but this course will give you a key introduction to game studies as an academic discipline and prepare you for future courses in which you learn to create various elements of video games. Identical with FLM 3360.*Approved Cross-list Course. Credit can only be earned for JMS 3360 or FLM 3360.
